  1. I am looking forward to getting a better understanding of, as well as experience doing grant writing. As an Environmental Science major, it is very plausible and quite common that I would need to know these skills as well as use them heavily in my future career. I find professional writing to be more of a drag to me, as I really enjoy creative writing, so I feel as though I will be able to learn a lot from this class because I don’t know much about the process of grant writing right now. Being able to already have the experience and knowledge of grant writing when I am putting together my resume is definitely something that will set me apart in the job application process. The main thing I am looking to get out of this class is a deeper understanding of grants as well as how to write them. I believe that I learn best while actively doing the process rather than just learning about it, so the way that Jesse has this class setup is really refreshing and exciting for me.

  2. When taking this course I wish to gain experience and knowledge to understand how the grant writing process works and how it can function as a team. I hope to improve my writing and research skills as well hopefully. I think this will be a huge part of my career as most museums use non-profits to fund their events to make relationships with other museums or companies to sponsor events like galas, displays, etc. Not only but even getting certain artifacts or other priceless items requires grants to function. Furthermore, hopefully be able to work with a team and get a sense of how that sort of operation works as that sort of “journalism” like teamwork is often foreign to me as a History Major. Also, my mom does this sort of work all the time so I am just curious about how her world works in that fashion.

  3. I chose to take this class because I am currently a graduate student alongside my last semester of undergrad. Writing and hopefully receiving grants are imperative to graduate school and the scientific field I am working in. I hope to become versed in the process and collaboration of grant writing, not only for my academic future, but hopefully for further personal and professional use. The ability to communicate why you/ your project deserves to get funded is not only helpful to A. get the money, but also B. effectively persuade people to see the value in your research/ non-profit/ etc. I also need to get better at collaborative writing, as I am a control freak that has really high standards for my own writing and for those I work with. Relinquishing control is definitely going to be an ongoing challenge, but a skill I need to improve upon.

  4. In this course, I am looking to start building upon some of my writing skills that I hope will help me in my future career. I am not sure what kind of career that I want to go into, I move between journalism and advertising, but the kinds of persuasive writing skills that this course promises will be helpful no matter what kind of career I decide to move into. I also believe, as was explained in class today, that skills in grant and proposal writing will make me a more marketable job candidate, and that I will be able to strengthen my resume with these skills.

I am also looking forward to the teamwork aspect of this class, as I believe it is a good idea for me to have real-world experience working with a team of people to complete a common, long-term project. I tend to get stressed out by group work, and my hope is that this course will allow me to work with focused individuals who have a similar interest to me, and that I will be able to work with them to create a successful proposal.

  5. I’ve been intending to take this class ever since I chose UNE because I felt as though these kinds of writing skills are vital to science fields. If I intend to do research, the only way it’ll be able to be conducted is with funding. Communication and writing are crucial in the professional world no matter what your career is. Being able to do so effectively can help you out immensely. For example, my uncle is in the science field and a big part of his job is essentially proposal and grant writing. Recently he worked on a project to get a vaccine approved in Africa, which is huge. To be able to compose your writing in a way to secure funding can mean life or death in some extreme cases, perhaps like this one. I’m hoping to come out of this class with the foundation of this kind of technical writing and build on it throughout my career in science and research.

  6. The objectives I have for this class are to learn the process of writing a grant proposal; understand what writing techniques and styles lend themselves best to grant proposals; how to find useful grants; and lastly, how to assess the proposals of others.
Furthermore, while I tend to already work well in groups, having more experience collaborating with others is appreciated. Therein, I’m also looking to improve my collaboration skills throughout the semester.
This course will (hopefully apply to my career) when leading efforts to secure funding for a company, or scholarships, or in general, to learn and develop a style of writing that is strong, persuasive, and intentional. This doesn’t necessarily have to be for grants, but to be able to be a leader of change in a way that is beneficial to me or a cause I support. Lastly, extending beyond written proposals, understanding how to present a grant orally and visually will be useful in my professional life.

  7. In this class, I am looking to expand on my knowledge of grant writing and the process of doing such. As a writer myself I find it very important to have skills and experience in nearly all genres or “types” of writing. It will give me a broader sense of professional writing and its role within businesses, nonprofits, and other career paths. Although I have not determined my career, I think grant writing could play some role in my outcome. At the moment I am actually interning at a nonprofit in Portland, The Telling Room. This nonprofit aims to help children become motivated, excited, and supported when it comes to creative writing. It also serves as a safe space for marginalized communities within Portland/Southern Maine area. Learning some of the essential skills in this class will have me better equipped for any tasks they may assign having to do with grant writing. It also gives me a head start on a potential job or career path in nonprofiits specific to writing.

  8. Through WRT317, or proposal and grant writing, I hope to develop my professional writing skills. As an aspiring journalist, learning how to pack information into each sentence and write in a condensed, professional, and informative manner is crucial. I hope that workshopping my writing in large groups will give me insight into how other people interpret my language and overall writing. Again, understanding how people perceive what I write is so important for any type of news writing. Learning how to tune a grant or proposal to a company will teach me how to write for a specific audience, incorporating techniques and skills, including ethos, pathos, logos, and more. Additionally, presenting my proposal for a final project will push me to practice explaining my work. As a writer, I often assume that my work is self-explanatory, so walking through and presenting each step will likely teach me how the organization, structure, and diction in my writing can be improved and help make my writing even more accessible.

  9. The primary benefit of entering and learning this class, which I expect is how to write a grant proposal is the expected outcome of this, since it’s the name of the course we’re taking. Being at the University of New England as a Marine Science major means that I may have an academic scientific future where successful grants for research will be integral to any future successes in that work. Being consistently effective at these kinds of proposals would mean the world to that kind of where I am able to analyze and recognize this kind of work and give a thorough review on it with little to no help certifying the competency of my work, or even providing that kind of feedback to others.
Another benefit of this class is how transferable the skills are. Since this is an English class after all the English language is used to write and vouch for other things besides research grants, like a query letter, and sales. If I end up not needing to write for grants, I can at least use the skills I learned for them toward other endeavors.

  10. I am looking to mainly improve my technical writing skills from this class. I am currently also taking a creative writing course this semester to work on my writing from that aspect, but persuasive writing is a skill that I find crucial in the real world and would like to strengthen for myself. In the future, I plan to go to dental school and practice dentistry in both the military and private practice. I believe grant writing could be an important skill down the road to apply for grants for dental research or equipment for whatever purposes that I desire in the future. Even if not specific to dentistry, being able to persuade others through writing can lead to great success, especially financially. Being able to write persuasively to obtain grants or find success in proposals is a valuable communication skill that I am motivated to work and improve on for myself.
