  1. Our group: Lettuce Farm Forever has selected the Maine Network of Community Food Council as our non profit organization. It was a pretty easy and very unanimous decision to make. Our group’s focus is on Sustainable farming and sustainable food production as a whole. This non profit covers a very large portion of what we value, as well as encompassing even more. The broadness of this organization’s website called us to pick it as we felt as though we would have a lot of information on what we are going to be looking for. As a group we have decided to communicate via text message and have already exchanged numbers/made a group chat.

  2. Selecting our nonprofit organization was not really a negotiation. The Maine Conservation Alliance is a Maine-based nonprofit organization located in Augusta. Some areas of focus that they emphasize regarding their work are racial justice, advocacy, and partnerships, specifically being part of Maine’s Environmental Priorities Coalition. This partnership specifically stood out to us when researching these nonprofit organizations. Some of their priorities are to recognize the right of Wabanaki Nations to govern their own land, environmental justice for all, and secure the future of Maine’s forests, all of which tie into our focus on land and water conservation, specifically regarding neglected groups of people or areas of living. Promoting democracy also appears to be a core value of this nonprofit, which is key to ensuring equal representation between groups of people and promoting environmental justice overall. They have also been addressing the climate crisis since 2001, and in doing so, they have partnered with communities that face the most adversity from the effects of climate change. The acknowledgment of environmental racism and the effort put into those areas represent another mission that matches what we are working towards and the granting foundation that we are researching. Uniting with community nonprofit organizations through a coalition demonstrates the presence of many connections within the environmental community and an established reputation, which suggests success in obtaining sufficient funding for their goals. We are communicating with each other through group text messaging.

  3. Jenna, Virigina and I have chosen the nonprofit organization Maine Network of Community Food Councils. This was one of the first organizations that we looked at, and the decision came quite easy. While our focus is on farming, Maine Network of Community Food Councils would give us a way to expand our scope for possible grants a bit more. We have decided to use a group chat as our way to communicate throughout the course of writing our grant.

  4. After having missed the “choosing” class, I wasn’t privy to the selection process. However, in revising the Journal #4’s of my teammates, I noticed that Kit has the Maine Environmental Priorities Coalition as her second choice. In Kit’s reasoning, I noticed that she cited conservation and community as the causes that attracted her to that non-profit. With that in mind, it seems as though these passions might have guided the group to choose the Maine Conservation Alliance. Moreover, after reading the “Who I Am’s” of my group members, it seems as though there wouldn’t have been much arguing or debate. I think the group seems decently agreeable and cooperative.

The one worry I have for myself is that this won’t be an organization that I’m very passionate about. Upon reflection of my preferred organizations – Maine Alliance for Smart Growth (Community and Economic Development); Realize Maine (Community and Economic Development); and Maine Animal Coalition (Environmental and Animal Related), I’m not sure I see much congruity with the Maine Conservation Alliance. These tended to be more aligned with community and economic development, not so much about environmental issues.

The way in which we are communicating is over a text group chat. This makes it very easy, direct, and casual to communicate with group members. We also have a shared Google Doc that allows us to collectively work on assignments remotely.

  5. – Our group has decided to inhabit Maine Alliance for Arts Education, a non-profit dedicated to promoting and encouraging art education for Maine students. We selected this non-profit because our group wanted to find something relating to art, education and culture.

    – There was no need for negotiation; we found two potential non-profits, and all agreed we leaned toward MAAE.

    – Our group is communicating via text/phone.

  6. Our group collected together ideas of sustainability and food access. Grace and I both had “Maine Network of Community Food Council” on our lists of non-profits we would like to work on this semester. Jenna had similar nonprofits that were environmentally centric. Together we looked through sustainable farming and food access nonprofits that addressed environmental issues and we decided collectively that we would choose MNCFC. This nonprofit is composed of tens of other smaller nonprofits and helps them connect to facilitate small scale agriculture in Maine. We were all interested in this nonprofit because it addresses issues of broken food systems, equitable access to farmlands, and racial&class inequalities that are tied to food security. Our mutual agreement helped us easily move forward into identifying our strengths. We are staying connected via a shared google doc and a text groupchat.

  7. Our group, Arts For Impact, focuses on art, culture, and education. The group consists of me, Maya, and Emily. We chose this name/project because that is where I would say most of our interests align. We have been communicating via text as we have a group chat. This is an easy yet effective way for us to communicate. Not only that, but we also have a Google doc to break down our ideas and plan things out when we cannot be there in person to chat. We chose The Maine Alliance for Arts Education, or MAAE for short for our non-profit organization. Founded in 1973, MAAE’s goal is to “promote and encourage education in all of the arts for all Maine students (MAAE).” They also wish to “empower participants with knowledge, skills, and resources and be champions for arts education across Maine (MAAE).” This non-profit is the best for us as it really seeks to our goal of funding arts education for all and to hopefully expanding that interest to those who do not dabble in the arts.
